Design is about making things easier and reducing the cost of being human inside systems that ask too much of people.
My approach starts with one question: what should this system take off the human?
Designing for Human Capacity
As systems become more complex, people are asked to carry more.
More tools. More decisions. More context. More uncertainty. More invisible coordination.
Designing for human capacity means asking what a system requires from the person using it.
How much attention? How much trust? How much memory? How much confidence? How much emotional energy?
Good design reduces that tax.
It gives people capacity back.
Emotional Ergonomics
Emotional Ergonomics is the practice of designing systems that reduce cognitive and emotional strain while increasing clarity, confidence, and momentum.
It asks a simple question:
Does this system leave people feeling lighter than when they started?
Not just faster. Not just more productive. Lighter.
Does the future need more than intelligent systems? Yes. But it also needs systems that leave people with more capacity to be human.
The Human Layer
Every intelligent system has a tool layer and a human layer.
The tool layer can retrieve, summarize, generate, route, format, and automate.
The human layer holds taste, intent, judgment, accountability, care, emotional nuance, and creative direction.
Good design makes the boundary between those layers clear.
When the boundary is unclear, people either overtrust the system or fight against it. When the boundary is well designed, technology gives people more room to do the work only people can do.

Orchestration
More screens is not the future of design.
It is better orchestration.
Better context. Better defaults. Better handoffs. Better memory. Better boundaries between human judgment and machine support.
As systems become more intelligent, the role of design expands from interface to flow: how work begins, how decisions move, where context lives, what gets automated, what stays human, and how feedback makes the system better over time.
Creative Capacity
AI should not flatten creative work into faster output.
It should expand the range of what people can explore, compare, direct, and refine.
Creative capacity is the space to follow taste, test alternatives, build worlds, combine references, critique results, and choose with intention.
The best creative systems do not make decisions for designers.
They create more room for designers to see, judge, and shape what is possible.
The Pattern
Designing for human capacity means knowing where intelligence should help, what it should carry, and what must stay human.
Observe the work
Map what actually happens, not what the process says happens.
Find the capacity drain
Look for searching, context loss, repeated handoffs, decision fatigue, rework, and unnecessary translation.
Separate the work types
Decide what should be removed, automated, assisted, guided, expanded, or protected.
Protect the human layer
Preserve judgment, taste, accountability, care, and creative direction.
Redesign the flow
Do not simply insert AI into the old process. Reimagine how the work should move.
Build the learning loop
Corrections, approvals, exceptions, and feedback should make the system better over time.
Measure capacity returned
Look for fewer handoffs, faster decisions, less rework, shorter time-to-context, better confidence, and more space for creative exploration.
The systems that matter most will give human capacity back.
